Celebrating ATC

Hello everyone - Thank you to those of you who have recently joined my blog, and thank you to those that follow my blog already - I am so glad you are all here.

I wasn't going to do a post for another week or so. However I heard about the ATC bloghop and challenge and was very tempted. So here I am!

The subject of the new ATC challenge is celebration - As it is their 3rd birthday (Happy Birthday!)

I was totally blank about this idea and had vague ideas of party hats. Suddenly I thought of a celebration with bonfire and fireworks.......

Only problem was what to do? I had no illustrations, no stamps and no ideas. Then I decided that I wanted to do texture - use texture paste. Only problem was I didn't have any....anyone who has read more than one blog entry of mine will have become familiar with the scenario where I find a substitute for a art/crafts item that I don't have.

Luckily I had seen a video demo explaining about using Gesso instead of texture paste. That is a good idea!!! But nope, that won't help me I am afraid - I don't have Gesso at the moment. Scanning the shelves and drawers I find tempera paint...spread over the mask and lift.....well, that was just a splodgy mess. Need something thicker.....Acrylic paint. So far, so good. The mask has lifted off and the shapes are intact.

After it had dried I got to work on the vibrant red, orange and yellows....The acrylic paint doesn't work so well with DI's so I have to do a mix of red, orange and yellow acrylic paint and Spiced Marmalade and Fired Brick DI's. A spritz of gold glimmer mist and I added a scroll of paper inked with Spiced Marmalade DI. I stamped the word 'celebration' with letter stamps in Black soot DI and added twirls of paper with stars attached to the end.

It was a lot of effort to get it right. And to be honest it will have been much easier to have just bought some texture paste! However, part of the fun in craft work (for me) is experimenting and I love seeing if things work....sometimes they do and sometimes they really don't! I like the look of this ATC (though sometimes it does remind me a bit of cheese on toast!)

So here is my 'Celebration' ATC - Hope you like it it! Please leave me a message if you do

  5. My cheese on toast never looks like that! Unless it's liberally sprinkled with smoked paprika of course ;-)

It's lovely and very clever to be able to substitute so creatively for missing materials......

  12. Great job and superb improvisation Laura. Did you know you can chuck sand into acrylic paint to get texture too! In fact you may end up raiding the garage/shed/workshop on a regular basis:)
Love the colours you've used - as you say very cheese on toast but also very warm and inviting, so just right for a party. Hugs, Jenny x
